Alternative Wind Energy

November 22nd, 2010

The concept of harnessing the power of the wind is centuries old. So, why is alternative wind energy suddenly becoming the new solution to our energy problems?.

The price of oil is constantly rising. Experts argue over how much fossil fuel is still available for us to consume. In addition, our fossil fuel consumption has already caused too much harm to our health and this world. We can even see massive changes in our climate today. Substituting oil with coal certainly would not improve the situation. We need to find different sources of energy such as renewable wind energy to find a long-term solution.

The energy crisis is a problem that effects the whole planet. That is why the whole planet needs to be part of the solution. The amount of fossil fuels burned or consumed by each country is certainly different. Economically more advanced countries have already implemented more renewable energy technology. Especially countries with a large manufacturing base like India and China are under pressure to take fast action as their countries emissions are very high.

We need to take action to stop our planet from becoming more polluted. All nations need to work together to find and develop alternative energy sources. Renewable wind energy as well as solar power could be one of those sources. These forms of energy are all considered to be clean and green and have the potential to be used globally.

Not all forms of green energy are suitable for all locations. For example, wind is required to generate renewable wind energy. Two countries who have already implemented alternative wind energy are Germany and Japan. Countries with a large shoreline are more suitable for the building of large wind farms.

To build wind turbine farms you have to go where you can find wind. Most wind can be found out on the open sea. More wind means more energy. The drawback is, that building on the open sea can be a big challenge. Each turbine would need to be able to withstand the harsh conditions on the open sea. Once the turbines are amortized, however, energy is being produced very economically.

Wind technology is set to further increase its’ efficiency rate. On one hand producing alternative wind energy becomes cheaper and on the other hand it is becoming more popular. Sven Sigaard, president and CEO of Vestas Wind Systems (Denmark) believes that once it is possible to build wind turbine farms close enough to the shore line and with technology that is efficient enough the kilowatt/hour price can compete with other forms of energy.

Mr. Sigaard originated in Denmark, a country where windmills were already used more than 200 years ago to generate more than 25% of the nation’s industrial energy requirements. We should certainly listen to what he has to say.
