Audition for singing

July 4th, 2010

When you’re going to a singing audition, be warned that it’s very different to choose songs to practice singing than choosing songs for a singing audition. When practicing, the idea is to expand your vocal technique and you do this by challenging yourself with songs with broad ranges. But songs for the audition should highlight your strengths and accomplishments from all those long hours of practice.

It’s important to choose one ballad and one up-tempo song when you get ready to audition. When it’s time to choose your songs you should look for songs with a story and plenty of range. There is no in between when it comes to ballads, either you hate them or love them. Those singers that only love up-tempos usually agonize over their choice of the ballad. When you choose a ballad, pick one that you can really relate to and the slow tempo areas will not seem so long. Choosing the songs will probably be the hardest part of your audition. The perfect audition song is one that shows off your talents and it can take time finding the right match for your abilities. Although it’s not easy, it’s a great idea to expand the repertoire of songs you’re comfortable singing.

The number one priority when picking your songs is to have plenty of variety. This will allow you to bring forth a well-balanced set of songs. Why not start with some high notes in the first song and then try a belt song afterwards to show your versatility.

Showing off your strengths as a singer will be easy if you have more variety. Always make sure you search for songs that show off high notes once you’ve finished your belt song. Be sure to demonstrate your all the highest and lowest notes that feel comfortable to you. One thing to remember is you definitely don’t want to have each song bring the same kind of character.

Singing a pop song will probably be one of your stipulations, but don’t be afraid to also choose an early musical theater song, later songs, pop/rock songs or anything else to accompany it. Many times singers will confine themselves to contemporary songs. Utilizing an earlier time period within your songs will be of great benefit when you have your audition.

At your audition, remember that they’re looking at you from the minute you walk in the door and not just when you sing. Show them how great you look in your outfit and remember that personality and charisma will set you apart from everyone else. Think about what the character looks like. It’s good to suggest the character, but not dress exactly like them. It also important to understand that you may not be offered the part straight away. Sometimes directors ask you back to audition again so make sure that you’re outstanding every time you audition and not just on a good day.

Now that you know how to to choose the best songs for sinigng auditions, you might also be interested in perfecting your singing voice. For the highest quality vocal trainging, I highly recommend The Singing Zone. And if you and your band are still struggling to get auditions and gigs, you’ll definitely want to check out Social Bandmaker.
