Best Skin Products 101

September 5th, 2009

Reading reviews of skin care products is not enough to make an informed decision on which to use. Because the product works great for someone else doesn’t mean it will work the same way for you. When choosing skin care products there are three main factors that play into every product selection you make. If you choose the wrong product, you put yourself at risk for a variety of skin problems. Some people even develop chronic adult acne as a result of persistent use of the wrong beauty items. Always pay close attention to your personal skin type and needs. This will help you determine what the best skin products are for you.

First, you must factor in your skin type. Focus on oil-free lotions and creams if you have oily skin. Most cosmetics will contain some oils. Read the ingredient list carefully before you buy. Major breakouts and an uneven complexion can be a result of adding oily products to oily skin. If you have combination skin, you should choose skin care products for sensitive skin. Combination skin means that part of your skin is oily and the other part is dry. Generally the areas around your nose and mouth are oily, with your cheeks and brow being dry. You may use two different products for these areas or purchase products specifically for sensitive skin. Either will help minimize breakouts and inflammation while accomplishing your beauty goals. Don’t use drying extracts like peppermint if you have dry skin. Of all skin types, dry skin works best with conventional moisturizers that may have artificial colors or scents. Almost all the time it is the most resistant to breakouts, but you will need to watch for scaling.

After you have determined your skin type, consider your age. If you are in your twenties then all you need to do is protect and moisturize. Meaning you should use a good SPF moisturizer. Do not use aggressive anti-aging or wrinkle repair treatments. They simply clog your pores and dry your skin. In your thirties you may move into anti-aging treatments if you wish, but still focus on prevention. Your forties is the earliest you should invest in serious wrinkle repair treatments. You may irritate your skin if you use products that aren’t age-appropriate. You could create wrinkles where there shouldn’t be any. The best skin care products for you will also match the condition of your skin. While age and type are important, weathering must also be factored in. For example, if you were a lifeguard in high school and got a few serious sunburns, you may need to move into gentle sun repair products sooner than if you spent your entire life with a minimum of SPF 15 on your face. Similarly, if you do not have sun damage or weathering, then do not indulge in a product to repair it. You would just damage your skin. Choosing the best skin products is a customized process. Do not be afraid to do something different than what everyone else is doing. The best skin care products for you are totally personal.
