Eli Manning Lets Hospital Keep His Money

June 11th, 2010

Eli Manning, decent human

It seems with celebrities and prominent sports figures, we only hear about it when they do something bad. I should know; after all, I’m an Oregon Ducks fan. So after reading the story of Eli Manning, the New York Giants quarterback, refusing to take money from a hospital in debt, I felt the urge to share.

Of course, it does seem like a common-sense thing to do. But as a person who reads and watches the news every day, let me tell you, the world is running a little short on decent people.

St. Vincent’s Hospital

It seems St. Vincent Hospital, who signed a marketing contract with Eli Manning, is in debt. The hospital is $ 500,000 in debt with Eli Manning. Reports say that St Vincent’s is $700,000 in debt, but I don’t know if that includes the money the hospital owes Eli Manning or if that’s just the debt it has incurred from money lenders.

Once he heard about the hospital’s debt, Eli Manning told them to keep the money. He also agreed to continue working to raise money for the hospital for free. Numerous individuals have pointed out that signing million-dollar contracts with celebrity athletes is what led to the hospitals humongous debt in the first place. St. Vincent has already paid $ 500,000 for the work Eli Manning has done in the past.

Finally, some good news

It seems every day we hear of athletes getting kicked off of teams because they’re arrested for domestic violence or some other type of assault. Of course, everyone will always remember the extramarital affairs that led to the take down of the uber-famous golfer.

A lot of people think that if you have a bunch of money you never have to seek help from your local payday loan store, meaning you have it all figured out. Certainly, waves of celebrities prove time and time again that money is not always the solution. So it’s really nice to hear that there are still good people like Eli Manning out there, willing to make things right when the opportunity is at hand.
