December 19th, 2010

Crass remarks on Facebook about the forthcoming royal wedding have gotten a Church of England bishop terminated. Broadbent, a Bishop within the Church of England, was suspended over comments made about the pending wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The Church of England was not amused. He is on an indefinite suspension.

Suspended bishop for showing up to royal wedding ceremony

Comments on Facebook got an Anglican bishop in trouble. In fact, he had been terminated because of it. The Rt. Rev. Broadbent, a bishop in the Church of England for the parish of Willesdon, a borough of outer London, took to Facebook and published some interesting viewpoints on the pending royal marriage, according to The Guardian. He made his remarks clear. They said:

“We need a party in Calais for all good republicans who can’t stand the nauseating tosh (nonsense) that surrounds this event.”

He suggests that the marriage would only last seven years as the longest amount possible. His reasoning for this is that the other English royal family members have had marriages ending in divorces like Prince Charles and Prince Andrews. Sarah Ferguson is always within the headlines though. This brings back the divorces too. There was lots of public backlash to the comments he made. He retracted them with an apology too.

Leaving permanently

An apology simply could not do, and the Bishop of London for the Church of England, the Rt. Rev. Richard Chartres, had to intervene. Broadbent’s boss decided he needed to talk to him. Then, he had been asked to “withdraw from the ministry until further notice by his boss. There have been no comments made by any of the noble family, Kate Middleton or Prince William.

Saying it poor

The comment from Broadbent might have only come for one reason. The BBC accounts that numerous think it’s because the event is getting so much media coverage. Certainly, super star events can be blown far beyond reasonable proportion at times. This hasn’t stopped the noble wedding for being planned at Westminster Abbey. It could be in April 2011.
