How To Relocate To Canada

November 15th, 2011

As a landed immigrant or refugee in Canada, you cannot vote in provincial elections or run for office, but you are entitled to many government benefits. You can get free food, free day care, and free healthcare. Many government-funded multicultural and ethnic associations and religious communities will do their best so that you feel welcome in the country. So, how to go about immigrating to Canada?

There are different ways to immigrate, but you should consider which immigration program works best in your case. The requirements differ for professionals and skilled workers, investors, entrepreneurs, self-employed persons, and other categories. If you apply as a skilled worker or professional, your application will be evaluated based on your work experience, skills, knowledge of English and French, education, and other criteria. Applicants should show evidence they held full-time occupation for at least one year and held a managerial position, professional position, or technical occupation within the past 10 years. Apart from education and work experience, applicants who meet the above criteria will be assessed based on their age, adaptability, and whether they arranged some form of employment in the country. Applicants are required to show proof they have enough money to support themselves and any dependents that arrive with them in Canada.

Investors, entrepreneurs, and self-employed persons are expected to invest $800,000 CAD or establish a business in the country. Different criteria apply to each category of immigrants. Investors, for instance, should invest $800,000, have 2 or more years of business experience, and have net worth in the amount of $1.6 million, obtained legally. Medical and security requirements apply to all applicants. They and their dependents are required to pass criminal and security checks as well as a medical exam.

Different criteria apply to entrepreneurs, but they also have to show they have business experience. The minimum required net worth is $300,000 CAD, and should be obtained legally. Farming experience or such that will contribute to the cultural life of the country is required for self-employed persons.

Meeting the eligibility requirements is important. You get a maximum of 100 points based on different criteria, some of which described above. A total of 76 points is required for a passing grade. It is a good idea to check the National Occupational Classification list. Your occupation must be listed there in order to qualify as a skilled worker or professional. If you were offered a position in Canada already, request a letter from your future employer.

If you are not sure about the types of documents to submit, you may want to contact the Citizenship and Immigration Office or the Canadian embassy. Be sure to follow up-to-date guidelines because they change occasionally. You may want to check the cost of moving to the country. Find more about the housing costs and travel expenses. It is a good idea to visit Canada and find what it is to live there. Inquire about everyday expenses too.
