Lockdown In Florida Schools

January 4th, 2011

A danger of a class shooting has locked down Broward County Schools. At least seventeen schools were locked down. As a whole, Broward County is the largest class district within the area. The e-mailed threat also mentioned Broward County govt structures, possibly post offices or libraries.

Locking Broward County, Florida schools down

The Florida school lockdown first began within the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Pembroke Pines. The lockdown was then expanded to include all 17 schools and 260,000 students within the school district. The schools are “operating as normal as possible.” This is what Nadine Drew, the school spokesman, said. Nobody is allowed to go in or out of the school. Going in or out of classrooms is also something that happens with a lockdown. Until police clear the buildings, the lockdown will stay in effect.

Broward County in Florida threatened

A woman called a radio station saying her husband was “going to a school to start a shooting” which is why the schools were shut down. An e-mail was also sent to the station, which was forwarded on to authorities in Broward County claimed that “something big had been going to happen” around government buildings. Police said the identities of the man and his wife are not yet confirmed. There is no longer a severe threat though.

Why you will find school lockdowns

It is still pretty new to understand “locking down” a school. Both U.S. and Canadian schools have “lockdown drills” now. In a lockdown, teachers and students have to stay put. Typically this is in a classroom. The theory is that this will restrict movements and keep every person within the school more safe. Lockdown drills are common in the Broward County school district. It has been practicing them for all 300 schools within the district.
