Salt Lake City Undie Run A Record-Setting Success
Who says Salt Lake City doesn’t like to have a good time! Were you there for the Salt Lake City Undie Run?
More than 2,200 individuals jogged through the streets of Salt Lake City in their skivvies this fall, setting a new world record.
This off-beat and goofy event, that was all in great fun and absolutely unoffensive (if you’ve been to a swimming pool anytime recently, you’ve seen people attired far more salaciously than these people) was a wonderful time for those who took part. I haven’t witnessed so much Salt Lake City spirit out in the streets since we hosted the Winter Olympics.
Athletes – a number of whom were unquestionably more pleasing to check out in their underwear than others – ranged from itty bitty babies to tiny old ladies. Needless to say, almost all were individuals in between.
The Undie athletes can be proud by the impressive margin by which they thumped the previous World Record – a previous best of 550 scantily clad citizens held the previous mark, set in Great Britain in 2010. However the planners say that they didn’t worry about the record all that much – what they wanted to show is that Utah is a place where folks are fun and laid back, not crazy and conservative.
This event may have gone a long way toward moving that stereotype in the exact opposite direction. Those who happened to be downtown that day and didn’t know about the event ahead of time sure gave the participants some funny looks as they jogged pants-less down the street.
The only concern it appears as though Salt Lake City could have is that with flash mobs along with other crowd response events gathering popularity around the world, it might not be too difficult for the 2,270 mark recorded by The Guinness World Record team won’t be too difficult to best.
In the event you didn’t get to participate this year, don’t worry. Another Undie Run is scheduled for August 2012.
