Police in Spokane, Wash., found a bomb near a Martin Luther King Day celebration route. A backpack with wiring was found by city employees before the parade started, and they notified police. Parade taken place after Spokane police defused the explosive device

MSNBC accounts that a Spokane bomb was discovered by employees in Spokane, Washington during a Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The Spokane explosive device was discovered by city employees, looking over the parade route a half hour before it was set to begin. There was a backpack found by city workers that was unattended. It was on a metal bench on the path. There was a reason why the backpack stuck out enough that city workers were willing to call the Spokane Police. It was because there were suspicious wires coming out of it. The explosive device disposal unit rushed to the scene to safely contain and get rid of the gadget, and the parade was delayed and rerouted.

Fatal gadget

The Federal Bureau of Investigation quickly took over the investigation, and the agent in charge said the bomb was “viable” and might have been able to “inflict multiple casualties” had it gone off, in accordance with the Spokesman Review. The parade marchers were what the explosive device was facing while it would have blown shrapnel into the crowd though. Two t-shirts were found within the backpack, one reading “Stevens County Relay for Life 2010″ and one reading “Treasure Island Spring Break 2009.”. ABC reported that a radio was to activate the pipe bomb found within the backpack.

Unknown information

The motivation to bomb the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration is unknown. Several individuals were going to be killed or hurt by the explosive device though. The Spokane and Northern Idaho area have been known to be home to hate groups, notably the Aryan Nations white supremacist group which was sued into bankruptcy as an organization several years back.
