Stoning Of The Devil Largest Of Muslim Holidays

January 7th, 2011

It’s really no wonder that Islam and the west cannot understand each other when you consider Muslim holiday season. November 16-19 marks the Muslim special occasion of “Eid al-Adha. A contrast becomes evident when comparing a commercialized special occasion, Christmas, with the “stoning of the Devil,” the practice of Eid al-Adha.

Muslims celebrating Eid al-Adha

The upcoming Muslim holiday season includes Eid al-Adha, followed by the Islamic Brand new Year on Dec. 7 and Ashura on Dec. 16. Muslim pilgrims made their way down the Mina Valley in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. This was all so that the Jamarat Pillars may have pebbles thrown at them. The Prophet Abraham resisting the devil is what the act symbolizes. The story states the devil wanted Abraham to not kill his only son Ishmael as Allah had commanded. Supposedly Abraham threw rocks at Satan so that he would go back to Hell and give up on what he wanted.

Stoning of the devil redone by pilgrims

Killing Ishmael is something Abraham’s wife Hagar tried to stop him from doing. Ishmael was not thrilled over it either. There are three Jamarat Pillars that represent the devil in the Eid al-Adha ritual. The devil is represented with the largest. It’s about how he tried to get Abraham to disobey Allah through temptation. Hagar trying to stop him from killing their son due to the devil’s temptation is what the second represents. Ishmael being tempted by the devil is what the third represents. It’s because he pleaded for his life.

Muslim holiday season could be lethal

In the past, Muslim holidays have been things to worry about. They start occurrences that can be deadly. The Jamarat Bridge has to be crossed annually by a ton of Muslim pilgrims to get the Jamarat Pillars. The stoning of the devil ritual has become almost impossible to control, and on several occasions hundreds of Muslim pilgrims have been suffocated or crushed. Saudi authorities decided they needed to help stop the issue. This is why the Jamarat Bridge was expanded into five levels. So the devil-stoners could get by means of with higher volumes of individuals, the Jamarat Pillars were exchanged with huge walls.
