Alternative Housing Options
Living outside the system is so hard that it’s almost not possible if one wishes to lead a comfortable life. Whereas a man once could begin over in a new town or an additional part of the country, our digital interconnected world has now made new beginnings all but impossible.
A growing number of men and women are “rebelling,” in several approaches, by refusing to partake of some or even all of conventional, mainstream life and even livelihood. So-called dumpster diving is a growing practice whereband y individuals literally appear within the trash for everything from furniture to meals. Yes, even discarded foods is sought, simply because even though it has been thrown away the food may well still be perfectly safe and edible.
For instance, a lot of supermarkets and restaurants will throw away expired food which could actually still be safely consumed. This is because of the fact that a lot of expiration dates often relate to freshness and perceived quality, typically having to do with taste, and have nothing to do with whether the foods can actually be eaten without issues.
Depending on various elements, such as the conditions of their storage prior to being dumped, even old eggs and old milk could be safely cooked and consumed with out consequence. More pernicious, nevertheless, are the attempts to secure decent, if not good, housing. Credit checks have been de rigueur for so long that it pretty much seems like there is a law requiring them!
And while understandable from the landlord’s point of view, from a wider societal perspective it can’t be very good in the long run that only a relative few can have their option of available housing stock. Thus have quite a few taken to living on house-boats as well as out of vans and insulated box trucks, taking showers at the gym and dining out virtually all the time.
