#touchedbyTSA Tweet Could Earn Totally Free IPod Touch Following Pat Down

December 14th, 2010

Thanksgiving air travelers can win an iPod Touch within the “#touchedbyTSA” promo sponsored through the social-mapping app Loopt . The promo will take place on November 23. Individuals enter to win upon refusing a full body scan, get searched manually and twitter update with the hastag #touchedbyTSA to share the experience. The TSA’s priority for airline safety means that protests such as #touchedbyTSA can have little effect on pre-flight screening process practices.

Choices of a full body scan or #touchedbyTSA

The reason why the #touchedbyTSA promotion is going via is because of the full body scanners. Everyone is mad about these scanners that basically show the person naked on the screen as they are searched. People who refuse to walk via the scanners have to submit to a manual body search or leave the airport. On Nov. 23, the busiest day at airports during the Thanksgiving holiday, maybe numerous air travelers who would have normally acquiesced to a full body scan will opt for the manual body search, simply for the possibility to win a free iPod Touch via #touchedbyTSA.

The problem with #touchedbyTSA

The TSA is likely angry. The #touchedbyTSA plan will probably make that worse. Hidden weapons and devices under clothing are best found with full body scanners. Yet because all a person has to do is stand in them for a few seconds, they accelerate the screening process and make passenger flow through airports more efficient. One of the busiest travel days of the year is likely going to have a ton of delays involved with it as a result of the #touchedbyTSA promotion and also the National Opt-Out of Airport Scanners day on November 23. The full body scanners used are being protested with National Opt-Out of Airport Scanners Day. The grass roots group ‘We Won’t Fly’ started this protest.

TSA frustration with protests

It seems like the TSA is getting a lot of crap from people recently about everything. That isn’t going to stop TSA head John Pistole. Earlier this week he told a Senate hearing that in the efforts to stay ahead of the airline terrorism threat, the TSA is seeking a proper mix between passengers’ rights and safeguarding them. His biggest priority is the safety of passengers. Each passenger needs to feel safe on their flights. He wants the TSA goals to be accomplished with the help of air travelers willing to “work together” rather than fighting it.
