UK Students get guide to Catering

November 14th, 2009

It has been announced from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) that UK students will be getting basic guidance and lessons from University for cooking safely whilst living on campus. Students cooking good and healthy food safely is not what people hear from the likes of University halls but that is now going to change. Small groups of people will be held responsible for looking after students whilst they are cooking on campus.
Why are the Government doing this? Firstly, it will be hopefully be teaching students the value of cooking food safely and properly and secondly it will save on damage costs on the University itself. At the moment there is literally too much damage being caused to University property and there has to be something done about it. Teaching students the value of safe cooking inside University campus is extremely valuable and can save a lot of time and effort. Whilst I was studying at University keeping the kitchen in a good state was not on the top of my priorities and neither was it anyone else’s. However, many Universities from across the country are now investing a lot of time and a good amount of cash to make sure students will be cooking safely in halls of residence. So, how are they going to do this? Initially, the Universities will be putting up helpful posters and banners to help studetns on campus and after that monthly appraisals will be introduced to monitor activity on halls.
Not every student is useless in the kitchen as many people would think. Corporate Catering courses at many Universities have gone through the roof and more and more students are signing up than ever before. Wedding Catering and Private Catering is a massive industry and more students are willing to learn about the trade. The work itself is really rewarding and pays really well so it is obvious that people will be interested in applying themselves.
