Virginia Schools Receive Grant Funds For Educational Improvement

Eight schools across Virginia including two in Virginia Beach obtained funding from the Dominion Foundation to support class horticultural projects along with the analysis of local ecology.

Kingston Elementary School in Virginia Beach was granted $1,000 to help support math and science students’ projects to create a vegetable garden. Plaza Middle School, likewise in Virginia Beach, received $1,000 to fund projects where seventh and eighth graders are creating a tree nursery to find out about indigenous species.

Booker T. Washington Junior High School in Newport News obtained $5,000 to assist the growth of their “Explores, Serves, and Protects the Bay,” project. The project involves growing sea grasses inside of a greenhouse ultimately to help reestablish the area rivers.

Portsmouth’s Churchland High School was presented with $2,500 for student-led multi-curricular neighborhood activities that promote overall health, wellness, and science issues.

$3,000 will be used for equipment upgrades to make environmental courses more interactive at Norfolk’s Granbury High School.

Middlesex Elementary will use their $1,000 to help institute the first ever Advanced Placement (AP) class. The AP study course covers statistics and enable those who take it the opportunity to receive university credit, in addition to high school credit.

Perquimans Central School seeks to promote its “Science Through the Eyes of First Graders” program. The $7,500 can help the program bring real-life scientific experiences to the students.

Newport News’s Virginia Living Museum will provide environmental science education with the $7,500 they were awarded. The classes will deliver specialized courses to third-grade students on the Isle of Wight County.

The grant was provided by the Dominion Educational Grants partnership and focused its attention and funds toward bettering science and math knowledge of K-12 students. The grant program provided $350,000 to 70 schools in total. The Dominion Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the energy production and transport company. This company gives about $20 million annually to charitable organization.
